N71 Reviews

The Nokia N71 IS a multimedia device aimed AT the premium END OF the market. It IS an ALL around multimedia device WITH NO special focus ON music OR photo LIKE the N90 (photo) OR the N91 (music). The idea OF the phone AND Nseries IN general IS TO have one single device FOR entertainment, music, information AND capturing AND sharing pictures AND videos. The phone IS a 3G GSM 900/1800/1900 AND WCDMA 2100 phone, which means it has coverage ON up TO five continents.

The N71 Camera
The N71 has two cameras. The main camera IS a 2 megapixel camera (1600 x 1200 pixels) WITH a 20x digital zoom. The SECOND IS a VGA camera (640 x 480 pixels) WITH a 2x digital zoom. I guess this IS NO Carl Zeiss, but technical specs seems good anyway. Propably better quality than a cheap digital camera. The camera has the following modes: still, sequence OR video.

Other settings included IS brightness adjustment, image quality, self-timer, white balance settings AND color tones. Video AND image editors ARE pre-installed AND you can upload images AND video clips TO the web.

The camera has a flash that operates up TO a range OF 1.5m. Flash modes ARE: ON, off OR automatic. WITH Nokia XpressShare, photos, video AND audio can be shared via email, MMS OR Bluetooth.

You can do video recording WITH 352 x 288 (CIF), 176 x 144 (QCIF) OR 128 x 96 pixels (SubQCIF) WITH a rate OF 15 frames per SECOND.

Display
Active matrix 2.4 inch QVGA main display WITH 320 x 240 pixel resolution AND up TO 262,144 colors. The cover display IS 1.36€ WITH 96 x 68 pixels AND up TO 65,536 colors. The main display has automatic brightness control. The display quality IS nearly AS good AS the one ON the N91. The N71 UI (USER interface) elements, LIKE fonts AND icons should be very smooth.

Battery
The battery life IS usually a problem IN many advanced phones. A big screen, video recording, listening TO music AND USING applications reduces a lot OF the battery life. The Nokia N71 has a lithium Ion (Li-Ion) BL-5C Battery capacious OF 970mAh.

The battery life IS a clear disadvantage. I have been USING the Nokia 6630 FOR a while AND it has the same battery (BL-5C 900mAh). WITH normal USAGE this IS maybe enough, but turning bluetooth ON AND USING applications reduces a lot OF the battery life. Nokia promises talk TIME (GSM USAGE) up TO 4 hours AND stand-by TIME up TO 9 days. IN reality, this could mean a DAY OR two without recharging if you use ALL the functions actively.

Operating system AND Memory
The phone IS based ON Symbian OS (operating system), S60 (3rd edition, Feature Pack 1), LIKE many other Nokia smartphones.

The N71 has 10 MB OF internal dynamic memory. FOR comparison the 6680 has about 8 MB free RAM AND the N90 has 48 MB total RAM memory (about 20 MB RAM IS free FOR the USER). It IS always better WITH MORE memory AS this will allow developers TO CREATE MORE advanced software FOR the phone.

You can expand the phones storage capacity (FOR photos, music etc.) WITH a miniSD memory card (128 MB). The phone supports "hot swap" card insertion AND removal - you do NOT have TO shut down the phone WHEN removing the memory. Further the phone has a slot FOR a miniSD card OF up TO 2 GB (2 000 MB).

One MP3 music file IS about 5 MB AND the same music file IN AAC format IS propably less. This means the 2 GB miniSD card could store SOME 400 songs IN MP3 format AND maybe 700 songs IN AAC format (Apple has chosen the AAC AS the file format OR their iTunes Music Store).

Connections AND DATA transmission
The N71 IS equipped WITH FULL-speed USB 2.0 Pop-Port, Bluetooth 1.2 AND a IR-port (infrared). This IS a dual mode WCDMA/GSM AND triband GSM phone. This means it has coverage ON up TO five continents (GSM 900/1800/1900 AND WCDMA 2100 networks). The N71 automatically switches BETWEEN bands AND modes.

Data transmission speed reaches up TO 236.8 kbps IN EGPRS (EDGE) networks AND up TO 384 kbps IN 3G networks.

Audio
Though the N71 generates stereo sound, I still wouldn´t sell my iPod! The phone supports the following audio formats: WMA, MP3, eAAC+, AAC+, M4A, MPEG-4 ACC LC, AMR-NB, AMR-WB, 64 polyphonic MIDI, RealAudio Voice, RealAudio7, RealAudio8, RealAudio10. You can transfer music FROM your compatible PC WITH the Nokia Audio Manager, Windows Media Player, OR SOME other compatible PC software. The music player has an equalizer. You can share your playlists WITH your friends over Bluetooth, MMS, OR email.

With the Visual Radio you can listen TO music AND interact WITH a radio station. You can find out things LIKE what song IS playing, who sings it, AND other artist information. WITH the Visual Radio you can enter contests AND answer surveys, vote OR your favourite songs AND download songs. MORE here www.visualradio.com

Nokia does NOT mention anything about the support FOR a standard headphone (3.5 mm) AND I guess this means you have TO use the Nokia Audio Adapter included IN the sales package. The sales package also includes the Nokia Stereo Headset HS-23. If you buy the Stereo Audio Cable you can plug the phone INTO your home stereo. The Nokia Stereo Audio Cable CA-72AU has a 3.5 mm connector AND two RCA connectors FOR playing music FROM your compatible phone through a home etertainment system.

Nokia N71
SIZE
For a multifunctional device, which serves AS a phone, MP3 player AND AS a digital camera the weight isn´t too heavy (139 g). The dimensions FOR the N71 ARE (98.6 x 51.2 x 25.8 mm). FOR comparison the N90 weights 173 grams AND IS one OF the biggest AND the heaviest Series 60 smartphones. Ericsson P910i IS 155 g AND the Nokia 9300 IS 167 g.

Keypad AND buttons
The keypad seems TO be OF good quality. It has a four way SCROLL KEY WITH center SELECT, two soft keys, application KEY, edit AND clear keys, send AND END keys AND a multimedia KEY FOR instant access TO your KEY application.

The active standby screen (also available IN the Nokia 6680) menu supports 5 icons AND provides quick access TO frequently used applications AND displays information, about CURRENT Calendar entries AND TO-Dos.

What ELSE
The Nokia N71 supports the new Nokia Web Browser WITH "Mini Map". According TO Nokia the browser has a semi-transparent zoomed-out overall VIEW OF the Web page allowing users TO quickly orient themselves navigate TO ALL corners OF the site AS well AS see the Web page AS it was originally designed. What that does that mean Anyway, the browser enables RSS feeds, so you can subscribe TO news AND receive regular updates.

Nokia Exits Chip Development

Nokia announced plans to outsource development of third-generation (3G) chips to STMicroelectronics and license out its modem technology, widening its supplier base and opening up the market. The world's top cell phone maker said STMicro would design and build 3G chips based on Nokia technologies for Nokia and other customers, freeing up research and development resources for other areas.

Nokia will continue to develop its leading modem technology, which includes protocol software and related digital design for WCDMA/GSM and its evolution. Nokia will then license this modem technology to its chipset manufacturers, who will use it in the chipsets they develop and produce for Nokia and - if they so decide - in the chipsets they produce for the open market.

This licensing and multisourcing strategy will allow Nokia to broaden its pool of chipset suppliers and leverage external innovation to support its wide range of products. It will also allow Nokia to focus on its core competence in modem technology and invest in R&D areas besides radio technology, such as in software to power internet services.

Based on this renewed strategy, Nokia is now working with four chipset suppliers. Texas Instruments continues to be a broad scope supplier across all protocols, Broadcom has been chosen as a supplier in EDGE, Infineon Technologies as a supplier in GSM, and STMicroelectronics as a supplier in 3G.

E65 Reviews

The Nokia Eseries has been popular among business users, and with the E65 Nokia shows that business phones can be stylish as well as smart. Aside from being the best-looking Eseries mobile phone to date, the E65 is also very slim. Armed with all the connectivity options you could want, plus a 2 megapixel camera and the 3G capable.

The Design...

The E65 is quite good – it positively differs from many sliders that Nokia released lately, just look at face-to-face pictures with Nokia N80, Nokia 6288 and Motorola Z6.
Sliding open the E65 produces a nice click and the sliding mechanism feels solid. This slider belongs to “slim-is-in” category, being one of the company’s smallest slider-styled offerings, measuring up at 105x49x15.5 mm. While Nokia’s range doesn’t feature any counterparts to this solution, Samsung is delivering such device in March - Samsung i520v (S60 3.1, 101.7x50.5x17.9 mm). Overall these devices share some commonality – to make sure of that you just need to put them side by side.

The handset weighs in at 115 grams and measures 137 mm long when zipped open, which makes for comfort. At the same time you can accept and make calls without sliding the E65 open.

The phone comes included with a velvety carrying pouch, which is astonishing.

But the trim is not the only thing highlighting unconventional style of the E65 – turning the handset around reveals leather-like surface of the battery cover. The plastic quality is good, in some places the finishing is something between soft touch and standard plastic coating. However the surface proves to be prone to mechanical effects, specifically the area next to the “pencil” key wore off due to the phone being put in one pocket with keys once. At the same time, while not in such extreme conditions, the E65 won’t expose these scratches. The chassis is painted into the same color.

The handset utilizes QVGA display (240x320 pixels, 2.2 inches, 34x45 mm), capable of 16 mln. colors (TFT). Much like other Nokia’s offerings, theE65 comes installed with a mirror layer for the display, making its usage in the sun a bit more like a breeze, and keeping the picture perfectly legible, which is especially vital for navigation mode. Also the handset carries ambient light sensor, which adjusts backlighting level basing on current light conditions.

Aim at voice services has called to life 4 special keys around the navigation pad, using these while at the standby screen or calling, allows one-touch access to the phonebook, merging active calls into a conference and starting it. During a call you can disable the microphone with a flick of a dedicated button. The last button found on the casing is called My Own, which means you can assign it to any feature or application. On the right spine is a dedicated sound recorder button, volume rocker and Edit key. The power button is located on the top end of the E65, while its bottom houses standard Pop Port and a slim socket for charger, as well as Infrared window, whose presence indicates that the handset spent a lot of time in development department of the company.

Numeric keys are pretty soft to press and bulky, which makes handling them a breeze. All keys are evenly lit in white. The Backlighting is not particularly very bright but rather comfortable. The back cover exposes no gap, removing it you will find a hot-swappable microSD memory expansion slot on the right.

E65 carries 950 mAh battery (BL-5F) onboard. But at the company page the handset is said to come equipped with 1000 mAh BP-5F (Li-Pol). I suppose, that is a manufacture’s mistake this time, as to all countries the phone comes included with BL-5F. The same battery is used in Nokia 6290 and Nokia N93i.

The battery life is quoted at 3 hours talk time and 240 hours standby time. In conditions of Moscow networks the handset lasted about 2 days at 45 minutes of calls, 2 hours of music, 20 minutes of gaming and 20 minutes of web surfing. More intensive usage of the device decreases the battery life to 1 day or even less than that. Browsing Internet pages for 4 hours straight drained all power from the battery, while non-stop music playback leads to the same result within 7 hours, for video the battery life makes up 2 hours. That said, you should expect one-two days of operation, depending on your usage mode. It takes the battery 2 hours and 15 minutes to charge from empty to full.

Team Suite...
This is the main app which is unique for this model only, for the time being. In this application you will find a list of commands that is managed and complemented with contacts from the phonebook by you. For each command you are at liberty to create group messages as well as make conference-calls with a flick of button, and communicate with your colleagues via Push to Talk. As for additional capabilities, viewing of communication log and catalogue of new links for a specific command are available. This very application is an add-on over the standard functions, in other handsets such functionality is achieved by spending more time only. Here it is implemented in a more easy-to-use fashion, especially for those who are really in dire need of such functionality.

Nokia Search...
An utility that started as an exclusive feature of Eseries, but now available for any Nokia-branded smartphone and allows searching for data in the phone’s memory, phonebook, messages, email boxes, calendar and stand-alone files – a truly handy app.

WiFi...
Everything works just fine here – the wizard available at the standby screen will assist you in tracking and joining networks (WEP, WPA and WPA2 security protocols are supported).

Bluetooth...
The smartphone carries EDR-less Bluetooth 1.2 onboard, as well as the following profiles:
- BIP-ImagePush;
- DUN-GW;
- FT-Server;
- HandsFree-AG (1.0);
- Headset-AG;
- OBEX;
- OPP-Client;
- OPP-Server;
- SIM Access-Server.

Regrettably, there is no A2DP profile here, meaning that there is no way to transfer stereo-sound to a wireless headset. And we are truly eager to find out the origin of the gossips about the E65 supporting this profile. Genreally, Nokia Mobile Phones’s solutions powered by the S60 are getting this profile on the board later than Nseries-branded smartphones.

An average Bluetooth data connection makes it to the level of 100 Kb/s speed-wise

USB...
The E65 houses the miniUSB-socket (no charging-over-the-cable is available, though), on C connection you are free to pick from USB Mass Storage, PC Suite, and Modem mode. With USB ver 2.0 in its pocket, the handset presents you with about 800 Kb/s in USB Mass Storage mode.

Camera...
Just like many S60-powered devices, the E65 houses a 2 Mpix CMOS-camera manufactured by Toshiba. But unless you are in great lighting conditions, the shots will keep going out noisy and blurry.
Using the settings you can pick one of the following image resolutions – 1600x1200, 1152x764, 640x480 and 320x240 pixels. The pictures quality varies from High to Basic, with Normal as a happy medium. Such shooting modes as single shot, multi-shot, self-timer (10, 20 or 30 seconds) are also available. You can also make use of the night mode, white balance settings (Sunny, Incandescent, Fluorescent). The Sepia, Black&White, Negative overlays help you to alter color settings. Digital Zoom can be activated by leaning the navigation key, but in the end you won’t be happy with it, as the bundled editor gives you an opportunity to zoom in the picture in the view mode with the better quality of image.
Video is recorded in quite mediocre quality. The 320x240, 176x144 and 128x96 pixels resolutions at 15 FPS are available, the E65 saves all clips in .3GP files, and some of them may have the sound turned off – it’s up to you to decide. As for the time limit, they are non-existent now, except the MMS-mode.

Pre-installed applications...
The handset comes loaded with Quick Office, ZIP, Adobe PDF, HP Printer. You can also upload Golf Pro Tour game.

So, at the end of the day, we have a well-packed device, sporting typical functionality for current S60 solutions, an add-on in the form of WiFi, a few extra keys and Team Suite that are of little use actually. The handset’s best looking departments are size and design, thus the E65 might be your choice if you are looking for these aspects.

The Nokia N93i isn't actually strictly an upgrade to the N93. The N93i is an evolution of the original design, to be sure, and the main point is that it's much slimmer and more visually appealing, thus attracting people who would have dismissed the original bulk of the N93. he N93i is the one most newcomers will buy, but there are quite a few compromises made in the N93i design that might annoy anyone determined to buy the 'flagship' S60 smartphone.

~ Appearance and design ~
Dimension: 108 x 58.6 x 25 mm; weight: 163g.

While the N93 comes in at 118х55.5х28 mm and 188 grams, the newcomer features 108x58x25 mm and 163 grams. Bluntly speaking, dubbing this handset as “so-much-more-portable” wouldn’t be the right thing, that’s why the way the N93i will be treated in won’t change too much, since the most crucial flaw of the phone is neither height nor width, but is thickness, brought about by such awesome camera module found inside, even though it has been shape-changed in the N93i. In-hands experience of the N93i is no different from what we felt with its predecessor, although the top half has become much lighter, it doesn’t make all the difference in the handset’s image.

First impressions of the N93i are excellent, with the large mirror-backed screen prominent and attractive, with a silver surround that's unfortunately not carried down into the base unit, which remains black(ish) - the two-tone silver/black looks a little odd.

~ Keypad ~

Opening up the Nokia N93i reveals changes too, both positive and negative. Most obvious is the flush, metallic keypad, probably a necessity given the new slimmer lines of the base unit. There are spidery rubber inlays to improve grip and give you a better sense of where the key boundaries are in the dark. Although this largely works well and there's a definite 'click', the amount of force needed to effect each keypress is fairly high and the N93i isn't as useable as its predecessor when it comes to text entry. I also didn't like the way there were no dividers between the Green/Edit and (more vitally) C/Red 'keys', it's going to be quite easy to go for 'C' and hit the hangup button by mistake, thus ending the application you're in.

~ Additional buttons ~

The power key sits on the top rim, the same button stands for switching profiles while in standby mode.

The right side features camera shortcut keys. The shutter button, marked with a red point, originates from usual digital cameras, as well as a ring rounding the key, which performs zooming in/out actions. The navigation key with OK button placed inside is located a bit lower – it’s used for changing camera modes and browsing through the menus, not in camera application. Frequently this very button allows managing the handset single handedly; however the dimensions override this handy possibility. Dedicated flash button becomes flashlight trigger while in standby mode – to tell the truth this might be the only application of the flash, as it doesn’t make much difference when taking pictures, because it’s rather weak. The side “OK” button locks and releases keypad lock, and once again, you can hardly make use of it. The Shutter key turns the external display into monochrome one, where you are shown current date and time.

~ Sizes, Ports and Slots ~

Now Pop Port is protected by a plastic drop-out latch (whereas on the original N93 it was a rubberized flap). The slot for miniSD cards has become much easier to manage as well – now you won’t have a hard time accessing it. The eye on the bottom end looks better on the N93i and moving the Infrared window from the top end of the upper half onto the side has brought some benefits as well.

~ Display ~
Over at Nokia they have come to the same conclusion and put under the mirror plate a OLED screen sporting the same resolution and displaying up to 65 K colors, but the dominating tones are always monochrome pastel colors, which allows the phone to keep the picture in acceptable state in various environments and on top of that this color perfectly matches the mirror finish of the handset’s face. The display is topped by an indicator having a pair colors onboard – green or blue depending on active mode.

On incoming call the external screen gets filled up either with the caller’s name or his number, and a variegated animated handset. Status indicators of signal’s strength and battery charge are curved a little adding some fashion-points to the N93i.

TFT, 240х320, 16.7 million colors

The N93i has 16 million colours rather than the N93's (paltry!!!) 262,000 available. What this means is that colours are more vibrant and more accurate, which is good. Not so good is that the change in screen technology has meant undistinguished performance outdoors, especially in sunlight. The outer layer of the screen proved too reflective and consequently ruined the contrast, whereas the original N93 screen reflected nicely off the back of the display, giving excellent contrast in the brightest of light.

~ Camera ~
3.2 Mpx, Video, 3x ZOOm

Although restyled, the camera seems to be identical, in terms of hardware, to that in the N93, though once you examine photos you'll realise that there is a significant difference.

The reason why the camera is integrated into the upper rim is not its actual measurements, but rather presence of optical zoom. Size of the matrix has remained pretty small and equals 4.5х5.5 mm, therefore images quality is not too far ahead of the competitors, however implementation of glass lens and considerable focus length allow acquiring good results. A small hood covering the lens which can be fastened to the casing with a strap is also an appealing detail. All in all, the manufacturer has succeeded in creating an illusion of a tiny amateur camera.

Similarly to Nokia N93 this camera is equipped with flash, highlighting you in the dark if needed.

~ Pluses ~
Slimmer, sleeker, shorter
Great display
Pop port and card covers
EDGE
Side joystick
Light Indicator for charging/missed calls/sms

~ Minuses ~
No Mini-USB and 3,5mm Audio Jack
Small external Screen
Keypad is hard to press
Poor Battery life

~ Conclusion ~
The N93i looks and feels like a second generation design and will doubtless delight many a new Nseries customer as well as make jaws drop around the world, in homes and offices, both at its looks and at the sheer number of things such a relatively small device can do.
Many good and bad things on the Nokia N93i, still it’s a very impressive phone which I’d definitely recommend before the old N93!
It become noticeable slimmer, the LED, the new cam joystick and the Camera improvements takes this phone on top. Still Nokia didn’t manage to give it a mini USB and 3,5mm audio jack, unbelievable...
