Review of Nokia 6315i

Nokia has always had a peculiar relationship with CDMA phones. The Finns dabbled in the space here and there but remained a staunchly GSM company. Then in 2006, Nokia decided it would retreat from the space almost completely by handing over CDMA handset design to Korea's Pantech. Though the Nokia name would remain on the CDMA models, for all intents and purposes, they are Pantech devices. The latest in the series, Verizon's Nokia 6315i, follows on the heels of the Nokia 6305i, which was also a Verizon handset. Though the EV-DO-equipped 6315i offers good call quality and adds some important features, its design and multimedia performance are a step down from its predecessor, the 6305i. The result is an acceptable phone, but as an all-around 3G device, it can't compete with the likes of the LG VX8300 or the Samsung SCH-A990.

The external display measure 1 inch (96x96 pixels) and shows 65,536 colors. It's a nice effort overall as it displays not only the date, time, signal strength, and battery life, but also photo caller ID. You can change the wallpaper and the clock style on the display, but no other options are customizable. It also acts as a viewfinder for self-portraits, but you must go into the camera option to activate this feature. Speaking of which, the camera lens and flash are inconveniently located on the top rear of the phone.

The 1.3-megapixel camera takes pictures in five resolutions (1,280x960; 640x480; 320x240; 176x144; and 160x120) and comes with a 3-, 5-, or 10-second self-timer; brightness and white-balance controls; landscape and portrait modes; three color effects; and three shutter sounds, plus a silent option. There's also a flash and a 2X digital zoom, though it's unusable at the highest resolution. And if you're ever lost in the dark, the flash provides a meager amount of light. The video camera records clips in one resolution (176x144) with sound and at 15 frames per second. The flash and the zoom are usable here too, and you can adjust the brightness and white balance. Clips are limited to a short 15 seconds. Once you're done with your work, you can save it to the 6315i's internal memory--it comes with 21.5MB of shared space--but you're better off using a Micro SD card. Despite being somewhat blurry, photo quality was average for a 1.3-megapixel camera. Colors were fine, but objects were a bit fuzzy.

As an EV-DO phone, the 6315i supports the full range of Verizon's 3G services including the V Cast video service and the V Cast music store. The music player's interface is standard for all phones from the carrier that support the music store. You also have the option to purchase a variety of Verizon applications including VZ Navigator and Backup Assistance and a host of alternative services such as Vindigo MovieGoer and Accuweather. And of course Verizon's Get it Now Internet service has even more programming choices. There are no included games, but you can always buy titles via the WAP 2 wireless Web browser; just remember that Verizon uses BREW instead of Java. You can personalize the 6315i with a variety of wallpapers, screensavers, and sounds, or you can buy more options if you want them.

The Nokia 6315i has a promised talk time of 3.8 hours and a promised standby time of 10 days. Our tests showed a talk time of 4 hours and 3 minutes. We also managed to get an MP3 playback time of 11 hours and 37 minutes. According to FCC radiation tests, the 6315i has a digital SAR rating of 1.37 watts per kilogram.

The good: The Nokia 6315i has decent call quality and a broad range of features including Bluetooth, a speakerphone, and EV-DO capability.

The bad:
- The Nokia 6315i's design is dull, and the controls are poorly designed. Also, music and video quality were uninspiring.
- Though it works fine as just a phone, the Nokia 6315i doesn't quite deliver on its 3G multimedia promises.

Review of Nokia E62

The Nokia E62 is a quad band GSM world phone with EDGE for data. It's a smartphone running Symbian OS 9.1 with Nokia's S60 3rd Edition software. You can sync it to Outlook, browse the web in full HTML glory, add 3rd party software, listen to music using the included stereo headset and watch videos. It has a brilliant 320 x 240 pixel color display, QWERTY thumb keyboard and Bluetooth. It competes with the Treo, Motorola Q, Cingular 8125 and BlackBerry devices. It's much slimmer than the 8125 (though wider), slimmer than the Treo and more fun and sexy than the BlackBerry 8700c and g. It's metal body and quality construction put the BlackBerry 8700c to shame. Since the Nokia E62 targets corporate users who are often forbidden to have camera phones, the E62 has no camera.

With the E62 you'll find a 1500 mAh battery, world charger with US prongs, USB sync cable, software CD with PC Suite, getting started guide, 2.5mm stereo headset and NO miniSD card.

Though very slim, the E62 is wide to accommodate the thumb keyboard and tall to fit the large display above that keyboard. It dwarfs the Cingular 3125, but fits in nicely with the Palm Treo 700p / 700w, T-Mobile MDA (Cingular 8125), BlackBerry 8700g and other keyboarded smartphones and PDA phones. The phone is finished in silver and the casing is made of metal which makes for a sturdy device. Score one for the E62: none of its direct competitors feature a metal casing. It's thinnest at the keyboard end and gets a bit wider in the display area, with a gentle slope marking the transition.

Below the display you'll find the usual Nokia selection keys which do different things, depending on context. You can change their home screen assignment in Standby under phone settings. The S60 programs launcher is located just to the left of the 5-way joystick and the email key is to the right. Call send and end buttons live just below the shoulder keys and the thumb keyboard takes up the remaining front face.

The Cingular version adds an "Own" (short for My Own) button on the keypad to the right of the spacebar. This functions as a quick launch application for four applications of your choosing. You must press the Fn button and the Own key to bring up the launcher. The QWERTY thumb keyboard's keys have good spacing and are domed so you can tell when you've homed in correctly on a key. The keys have very little travel which reduces tactile feedback and can lead to finger fatigue. That said, the keyboard is still very usable and we found ourselves adapting quickly, though it's not as good as the BlackBerry 8700. The number keys are located in the keyboard's center and are masked in blue so they're easy to pick out. Should you need to dial a number with letters (e.g.: 800-CALL-ME), hold the chr key while pressing the letter and the phone will translate that to the correct number.

There are two shift keys (one to the right and one to the left of the spacebar), Nokia' s usual Chr and Ctrl keys (think of Nokia Communicators such as the Nokia 9300 which use those two) and a blue Fn key with an arrow to switch to numeric entry. You can turn on shift lock by pressing the shift key twice in quick succession and use the chr key to enter symbols. You can lock the keyboard to prevent accidental button presses by briefly pressing the power key and selecting "lock keypad". We noticed that the E62 switched back to the default Nokia ringer rather than our selected ringtone when the keypad is locked. . . strange. If we used the other keypad lock method (press the left soft key then the Fn key in quick succession) the ringtone wasn't changed.

Conclusion:

The E61 is one of our favorite smartphone / PDA phone devices, and the E62 is also near the top of our list. Had Cingular left WiFi intact, the phone would've earned another half star. Though some of Cingular's changes were for the better: the standard mini USB sync port and 2.5mm headset jack are more IT friendly than Nokia's Pop-Port connector. The E62's low price tag, large and exceptional display, QWERTY keyboard and smartphone features make it an excellent choice. It syncs easily to Outlook, supports several push email solutions including BlackBerry connect and it makes a good MP3 player too. We wish the phone were a little more responsive when opening folders and launching applications.

Nokia 8800 Review

This phone is solidity in meat. It seems and one feels very prestigious. You understand immediately that this one is a true something not hardly a little of trinket of China. The dimensions of the telephone are 107x45x16.5 millimeter, load 134 grams. Some suppose that Nokia 8800 is a connection between the Nokia telephones 8910/8910i of the image and the line of Vertu for 8800 Nokia and identical steel black of Vertu.

From left to right: Nokia 8800 from steel, Nokia 8910i from alloy containing titanium, Mobiado Professional from anodized aluminium, Vertu Black Leather from steel.

The history of the sliding metalists of Nokia includes more than a generation. The first one of them, Nokia 8810, appeared when it was not the notion of the “sliding one” so still raised.

Its descendant - Nokia 8800 - maintains the best characteristics of the class. It includes the style of Nokia and (as far as the model of the image) the operation and the long-range charisma of the telephone of the businessman guessed right.

To open the phone one needs to set a thumb against a special relief spot with a pattern consisting of shallow apertures for the thumb not to slide off.

In Nokia 8800 the sliding part includes both display and the keypad. A curious reader may object that we saw such construction in Nokia 8910/8910i. In the models mentioned above the hand holds only case while the phone itself “shoots out” of it. In Nokia 8800 the fixed part is not a mere case it contains an in built main phone chip plus battery plus other essential parts.
The phone is equipped with semi-automatic mechanism. Unlike Nokia 8910/8910i where user has to press two side buttons to make the telephone “shoot out” on its own in Nokia 8800 user is to drive the sliding part half way and the rest of the trip it'll do on its own due to a special spring. On the other hand the reverse process is also semi-automatic while Nokia 8910/8910i is to be closed manually which sometimes takes pains – at least it is difficult (if possible at all) to fulfil such operation with the help of only one hand for the spring is to be led up for the next “shot”.

Disappointing of the small piece was the fact that there is no sounds while opening or closing the slider. Most of sliding modern are able to emit various kinds of warbles while being either opened or closed. Nevertheless this action in Nokia 8800 is accompanied with a so expressive natural sound that the artificial effects could look like redundantes in the present situation. As usual phone opening/closing corresponds to receiving/ending the call.

One of the problems of all image phones with smooth mirror-like surfaces is fingerprints left on it. Nokia 8800 is not an exception.

The fingerprints are also seen on the screen and on the metallic parts (though to lesser extent)

Nokia 6305i Review

The phone is cool, nice interface, and nice stereo sound...
It has very loud and clear speaker phone and very long battery and talk time life.

The Stylish design was looks more like a design we're used to seeing from LG.
It is a slim and stylish phone but still has a slightly bulky headset. It is a totally new design for Nokia, which is good, but the features provided with this phone are a bit perplexing. It comes with a mega pixel camera, a speaker phone, and 3G support for Verizon's V Cast service. While Verizon usually restricts Bluetooth anyway, with this 3G phone it needs to step up to the plate and add the Bluetooth capabilities and the memory slot in order to attract the business crowd.

With Nokia and Pantech joined together as partners this is one of the first offerings from that partnership and, its unusual design serves up a taste of what the future my hold for Nokia lovers. This slider form factor with rounded corners is a huge step above Nokia's standard candy bar style phones of the past. This sleek, aerodynamic phone with bright silver color scheme is a bit hefty but that is normal for a 3G phone. Plus, the sturdily constructed phone fit well in the hand and is comfortable. The slider part of the phone strikes the perfect balance as it is easy to open with one finger but isn't too loose as to create a problem.

Many people were quite impressed with the Nokia 6305i's 2-inch-diagonal, 176x220-pixel display. Supporting 262,144 colors, it's among the brightest and most vivid displays we've seen on a phone of this caliber. It's great for showing off pretty much everything on the phone, and it's even somewhat visible in direct sunlight. You can change the backlighting time and the font size but not the brightness. The menu interface conforms to the standard design that Verizon is pushing on all its handsets. Although we give the carrier props for trying to make everything uniform across its lineup, there's no menu customization allowed, as well as nothing in the way of animation. What's more, we still can't imagine why the V Cast player is buried under a couple of submenus.

Below the Nokia 6305i's display are the quirky but still user-friendly navigation controls. Nokia has a history of tinkering with button layout (the Nokia 3200 and the Nokia 3650 come to mind), though the effect is not always successful. With the 6305i, however, the opposite is true. The circular keys are eye-catching, well sized, and tactile, and they didn't take a huge learning curve to use. Four keys are set in a ring, including two soft keys, the Talk and End buttons, and a Clear key. There's a small, round camera shortcut button, and in another un-Nokia move, the End key doubles as the power control. Inside the aforementioned key ring is a circular navigation toggle that doubles as a shortcut to the Get It Now menu, the Web browser, the V Cast launcher, and one user-defined shortcut. Finally, inside the toggle is an OK button.

The bad of this phone is it's has not Bluetooth or external memory slot, the Nokia 6305i's feature set is lacking. Also, picture quality wasn't too great.
